Valley's Heitzman Bakery location closes

After limping along for just over a year, Heitzman's Valley Station store has closed its doors.

The store, located at 5427 Valley Station Road, occupied the space formerly filled by Porky's Barbecue. Other prior tenants included Bake's Barbecue and a short-lived liquor store.

The property was once home to a Dairy Mart convenience-style market and gas station.

On a personal note, I'm sorry to see this place go. What does it take to get locals to support local businesses? Or does the community only want large chains?

Signs have been posted on the door and windows of the store referring customers to the Dixie highway location on the outskirts of Shively.

  1. I've noticed that a lot of businesses don't do a very good job of letting people know they exist. I had no idea there was a Heitzman's there.

  2. I hate to say it, but till people start buying local, it's going to be tough. That said, I think there's a large untapped market where you are.

  3. Aside from letting off fireworks, I think they did what they could to let people know they were there. But I see Roger's point. I don't think it would have hurt to place some signs out near the highway.

Terry, I just don't get it. We have a desire and a need for these places, yet people seem to turn their backs on local shops out here. Everyone here has money to spend. They just drive somewhere else to spend it. That said, I did hear complaints on the Heitzman's. People said it was "too high" and felt weird about how the store didn't actually bake anything at that location, just shipped it in from Shively. I, personally, had no problem with it.

I think that particular space is doomed. The building needs a facelift.

  4. I'm not happy! I didn't patronize this store because i can't eat thing with dairy. still, I thought they would do well. That spot seems to be jinxed in some way.
