Yarmuth to GM: Put U.S. First

Congressman John Yarmuth called on the current and incoming CEOs of General Motors to immediately reconsider opening new facilities in Mexico while that company remains indebted to American taxpayers.

“While the leadership of GM may believe such a decision makes economic sense and helps boost profit margins, it ignores the fact that your company would not exist today were it not for the support of American taxpayers,” wrote Congressman Yarmuth in a letter to GM. “Along with these dollars, GM should also have accepted a responsibility to put America’s economic recovery first, and not that of any other nation.”

Earlier this month, GM announced it would begin production of a new line of vehicles and engines at a plant in Coahuila, Mexico, generating 390 jobs south of the border.

In December of 2008, President George W. Bush announced GM was one of several American automakers that accepted federal aid, ultimately receiving nearly $50 billion in financial assistance.

“The automotive workforce is critical to the manufacturing base of the American economy,” wrote Congressman Yarmuth. “It is both an economic and moral imperative to the American people that these jobs are kept in the United States.”

District 12 Dialogue - January 20th

This looks like it could be an interesting get-together. Any time Bud Schardein shows up in Southwest Louisville there could be fireworks. But then again, it could turn out to be a normal neighborhood meeting. One never knows. Besides, Congressman Yarmuth's office is sending a representative. If you live in District 12, try to make this meeting. If you cannot be there, don't worry. The Valley Report will be providing full coverage.

District 12 Dialogues resume on Tuesday, January 20th
MSD Director featured speaker for 7:00pm event

Louisville -- Councilman Rick Blackwell announces the kickoff for the 2009 District 12 Dialogues will be on Tuesday, January 20th at 7:00pm.

"I want to issue an invitation to everyone in the district to come out and meet with me as we continue to address concerns and issues in Metro Louisville," says Blackwell.

The featured guest for this first District 12 Dialogue will be Bud Schardein of the Metropolitan Sewer District. He will discuss future MSD programs during the meeting as well as update current drainage projects and sewer projects that are ongoing.

"MSD has made a great many improvements to our area," says Blackwell. "This is a chance for residents to get the correct information about what MSD is planning with improvements and how it will affect everyone."

The meeting will be held at Conway Middle School, 6300 Terry Road.

Representatives from Louisville Metro Police, the Division of Licensing and Permits, Neighborhoods and other departments of Metro Government will be on hand to answer questions about programs or concerns. A representative of Congressman John Yarmuth's office will also be in attendance.

Yarmuth Assigned to Ways and Means Committee

Your 3rd District U.S. Representative, John Yarmuth (D-KY), has been assigned to the Committee on Ways and Means starting next month upon the opening of the 111th Congress. This is good news because Ways and Means is a powerful committee that has jurisdiction over Health, Trade, Social Security, Oversight and Income Security & Family Support.

It Is Over

With only a few exceptions, I feel like we did pretty good tonight in Louisville. Yarmuth buried Northup, which was very satisfying to me. A friend of mine saw Northup today on the back of a trolley, waving. No one was waving back. She said it was like Northup on a train heading out of town.

But at least "That One" is now "The One".

Kentucky is still stuck with Mitch, and Boswell got beat by a guy that thinks $7.73 an hour is a good wage. We have a lot of work to do. Have a look at what my buddy Jim @ the Hillbilly Report has to say about it HERE.

Congratulations to Perry Clark and Rick Blackwell. Both of these guys ran clean campaigns while under constant attack from inept and unethical competitors. Residents in the 14th Metro District got Bob Henderson back, for good or ill. Henderson had better use this term wisely, because if a strong Democrat ever emerges in the 14th, he's done.

The judicial races were good, except for that silly Katie King thing. I will never be able to understand why or how that happened.

A new day starts tomorrow, and we have much to discuss. I'll be digging in on the Mayor's new tax on charitable organizations or any other groups looking to host events in the city that may involve a street closure, and I'll take a critical look at who gets the exemptions (yes, there are exemptions). I was pleased to see my former Ford co-worker and close friend Kirk Gillenwaters starring in this commercial for John Yarmuth. I was told by his people that, barring some inconceivable circumstance, all of John's spots will be "positive" from here on out. Nice to see some honest campaigning here in Louisville.
