Another one bites the dust: A&W on Dixie now Kahuna Nui

What LEO Weekly termed as the "last of a dying breed" in 2006 actually died in 2010. The last free-standing A&W Restaurant & Ice Creamery in Louisville, open since the early 1960's on Dixie Highway near Kosmosdale, unceremoniously closed its doors a few months ago.

It has reportedly been reopened as "Kahuna Nui Burger and Fries". The property, located at 14126 Dixie Highway, is owned by Royal Holdings, LLC and has an assessed value of $28,250 according to the Jefferson County PVA office.

  1. Shame. I had some good times there. Best root beer anywhere.

  2. It never closed, just changed names. Lots of corporate politics involved, same owner and has been in the same family for over 40 years.

  3. Just talking about that place the other day at work. Don't get out that way anymore, had no idea it closed. Where can I get draft root beer on tap, by the gallon?

  4. If it's no longer an A&W, than yes, IT CLOSED. That's like saying a KFC "just changed names" to Jimmy's Chicken Shack.

    It ain't the same, sorry.

  5. Yeah, it actually is the same - it's the same draft rootbeer in a frosty mug(yep u can still get it by the gallon), still made in the basement! Like was said by a smart individual before me...alot of corporate BS telling them that they can't make their own rootbeer and had to serve only certain menu items just to be able to PAY to keep the Allen & Wright(A&W) name! Still better than any new a&w restaurants out there hands down, or is it because I live across the street from it? Maybe both!
